Practice Experience:

Barbara D. Johnson was appointed to the Clark County Superior Court in 1987, and served 28 years until her retirement on March 31, 2015. She was Presiding Judge from January 2008 through March of 2015. Her duties encompassed all areas of the general jurisdiction trial court, including criminal, juvenile and family law; civil law including personal injury, employment law, business, construction and real estate, estate and guardianship, as well as administrative appeals and appeals from limited jurisdiction courts.

Prior to appointment to the bench, Judge Johnson was a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for King County (Seattle) (1976-1979) and in private practice in Vancouver, Washington, and Oregon (1980 to 1987). As with her judicial experience, her private practice was a general practice including personal injury, family law, criminal law, and real estate. She is admitted to practice in Washington, Oregon, Federal Courts of both states, and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Professional Activities:

Judge Johnson served as Vice President and Trustee of the Clark County Bar Association and member of the Boundary Review Board. She was President of the State Board of Directors of Washington Women Lawyers in 1983

During her judicial career, Judge Johnson was on the faculty of the Washington State Judicial College and has been a presenter at CJE programs, as well as CLEs in Washington and Oregon. She participated in Washington state committees including the Courthouse Security Task Force and the Governor’s Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee. She is a member and served as Vice-President of the Simpson Inn of the American Inns of Court in Vancouver. In 2006 she was named Judge of the Year by the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association. She served as a member and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Clark College Foundation and is a member and received the Vocational Service Award of Vancouver Rotary.

ADR Background:

Clark County Superior Court requires mandatory judicial settlement conferences in all dissolution cases set for trial and conducts settlement conferences. Judge Johnson has conducted hundreds of settlement conferences, primarily in family law but also including personal injury and other civil cases. She is a graduate and certified mediator through the National Judicial College, Reno, Nevada.
